Efficiency of Heliconia psittacorum in the treatment of wastewater from Kimpa Vita University, Angola

Abstract

This study focuses on the use of local macrophytes in the domestic wastewater treatment system, under a vertical flow regime, in a tropical climate. The main objective of the research focused on evaluating the purifying performance of Heliconia psittacorum, a local plant from the Northern Region of Angola, applied in the treatment of domestic wastewater, in peri-urban and rural areas (such as Kimpa Vita University), by filters planted with macrophytes. The experiment was carried out in two effluent retention periods in the pilot filtration system, and the statistical analysis indicated a significant difference (p > 0.05) in the quality of the filtrates between the 24-hour and 7-day retention periods for the five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS) and Kejeldahl total nitrogen (TKN), despite the visible difference in the theoretical removal rate of BOD5 and TKN in both periods. However, the nullity of the 24-hour effluent purification rate in total Coliforms, Echerichia Coli and Enterococci created a significant difference (p < 0.05) with the 7-day period, which implies that the improvement in filter efficiency depends on the greater contact time between the effluent and the microbial biomass. Furthermore, Heliconia has good hydraulic conductivity, due to the development of its roots and rhizomes, and allows it to withstand hydraulic overloads.
