Analysis of the role of HEIs in the framework of post-general election protests in Mozambique

The research is concerned with analysing the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in the context of the demonstrations following the 2024 general elections in Mozambique. The research is qualitative and bibliographical. The main lines of research are: i) characterizing higher education institutions; ii) describe the manifestations and; iii) present the results of the general elections. The research reveals that the demonstrations called by Venâncio Mondlane result in the destruction of public and private infrastructures vital to the national economy, causing the population to lose jobs. FRELIMO, the ruling party, uses police including canine police to intimidate and kill protesters. Higher Education Institutions are not fulfilling their role of teaching, research and university extension with FRELIMO and the opposition led by Venâncio Mondlane. This attitude goes against the slogan “To serve and not to be served” spread by Cardinal Alexandre José Maria dos Santos, when he created the São Tomás University of Mozambique, which aims to respect the dignity of the human person and eradicate absolute poverty among Mozambicans.
